Genevieve H. Jones


Nags Head- Genevieve Hamman Jones, 94, passed away June 10, 2010 at the Outer Banks Hospital. She grew up in Jonesboro, Arkansas but has lived on the Outer Banks since 1957. She moved to Washington, DC from Arkansas during World War II where she worked many years for the General Accounting Office. She met her future husband, Lonnie Jones, a local Manteo boy, during her first trip to the Outer Banks. She provided the transportation to the beach and a friend provided a place to stay near Jeannette’s Pier. Local boys were alerted to the fact that single city women were in the area.

After marriage, she and her husband lived in Washington, DC for a short while and then moved to Kill Devil Hills and eventually built in Sunnyside on Roanoke Island. Gennie continued to work for the federal government at Cape Hatteras National Seashore. After retiring from the National Park Service and her husband retired from the Merchant Marines they opened a gift shop, Captain’s Corner, at Whalebone Junction in Nags Head.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Jones. She is survived by her daughter, Claudia Jones and a granddaughter Emma of Nags Head, and siblings, Evelyn Tippen of Jonesboro, Arkansas, Robert Hamman of Indian Rocks Beach, Florida and Jack Hamman of Madisonville, Kentucky.

She loved reading, crossword puzzles, tomatoes and her friends and family and especially her granddaughter. She also loved Homer the dog and Asa the cat despite not initially voting them into the household.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 20, at Gallop Funeral Services Chapel at MP 16.5 in Nags Head. Inurnment will follow at Roanoke Island Memorial Gardens in Manteo. Memorial donations may be made to the Dare County Library, P.O. Box 1000, Manteo, NC 27954.
