is with great sadness that I announce the peaceful passing of my
mother, Sally Niles Ostrom Schafer of Sunny Lane, Grandy NC on May 31,
2016. Sally was born on August 25, and raised in Wyomissing PA,
to Charles Ostrom and Virginia Niles Ostrom, both of who preceded her
in death. She later graduated from Penn State, and shortly after she
was married, settled in Reston VA. Here, she continued to raise her
three children, and after she divorced, as a single-mother. In 1981,
she moved to her favorite place, Nags Head NC. Here, she enjoyed making
new friends, spending time with her children, and became an avid
“fisherwoman”, winning many awards. Sally also enjoyed playing tennis,
reading, many types of music, and her cats. Although she made many
close friends on the outer banks, she also kept in close contact with
her two sisters, various family members, and the many friends she
had known over the years. Sally became a devoted member and volunteer
of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Grandy NC, and also volunteered
at The Lower Currituck Food Pantry. In her later years, she also
developed a love of gardening.
Sally “Mom”, “Memaw”, “Beach
Santa”, was preceded in death by her two children, Loretta Anne
Casasanta and Lawrence “Larry” Charles Schafer, and a sister, Nancy Mae
Ostrom; She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Margaret Schafer;
grandchildren Michael “Mike” Anthony Casasanta, Phillip Schafer
Corrigan, Nicole Catherine Schafer and two great-grandchildren, Jaeda
Eileen Henson and Emily Nicole Corrigan; sister Joan Meyers and her
husband Barry Meyers; nephews Michael, Jay, and Scott Sensenig, and Tom
Meyers; and nieces Alison Myers Franco and Leslie Meyers; and her very
special cat, Jing.
The family will hold a memorial service at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church Saturday June 11, 2016 at 1 PM.
